Types of Mold › Aspergillus
Aspergillus is among the most common molds found in homes — a large group of species that appear in many colors, from yellow-green to gray to black. It's so widespread that small amounts are nearly everywhere; the concern is active indoor growth fed by moisture.
It favors walls, insulation, paper, and stored items, and frequently colonizes HVAC systems and ductwork where it can spread spores through the home. Damp basements and humid storage areas are common Richmond hotspots.
Reactions vary by person and species. Aspergillus can trigger allergic and respiratory symptoms, and certain species pose greater risk to people with asthma, allergies, or weakened immune systems. As with all indoor mold, sustained growth should be removed rather than disturbed.
Removal follows standard remediation: contain the area, filter the air with HEPA equipment, remove colonized porous materials, treat surfaces, and — critically — correct the moisture source. HVAC contamination calls for specialized cleaning. See residential remediation.
